UN Chief Condemns ‘Ongoing Military Coup’ in Sudan
In the face of ongoing military coup against the prime minister in Sudan, the UN Secretary- General Antonio Guterres stressed that Sudanese stakeholders should return to dialogue and restore the constitutional order. Guterres also emphasized that UN reiterates support to the peaceful political transition and democratization of Sudan.
Michelle Bachelet -the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights- also condemned the coup in Sudan and emphasized the fact that the coup may jeopardize the peace-making and democratization process. She called on Sudanese army to withdraw from streets, release Prime Minister, several ministers and also civil society representatives by abiding by constitutional rules. She, on the other hand, pointed out that internet and other means of communication has been limited during the coup and this situation contravenes international law from perspective of freedom of expression.
Volker Perthes, -the head of the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission Sudan (UNITAMS)- also condemned the arrests of the Prime Minister, government officials and other politicians and urged everyone to return to peaceful dialogue process.
