100: Xi Warns China CCP Will Not Be 'Oppressed' in Anniversary Speech

Last Thursday, China celebrated the 100th anniversary of the ruling Communist Party with a crowd of about 70,000 people in Beijing's Tiananmen square. It was remarkable that the crowds that attended the celebrations were carefully vetted many of them not wearing masks. Weeks before the celebrations, there has seen a media campaign promoting China’s history which was compatible with the Communist Party’s official historical perspective.

China's President Xi Jinping delivered a defiant speech at the event and warned that foreign powers will "get their heads bashed" if they attempt to bully or influence the country. It is also remarkable that Xi also said that Beijing would not allow "sanctimonious preaching" implying the US when worsening US and China relations in recent times over trade, espionage and the pandemic as well as the issue of Taiwan that has been a major source of tension is considered.

In his speech on last Thursday, President Xi also  said that China maintains an "unshakeable commitment" to unification with Taiwan. Furthermore he declared that "no one should underestimate the resolve, the will and ability of the Chinese people to defend their national sovereignty and territorial integrity," In response, Taiwan said it was determined to defend its sovereignty and democracy. In  the Taiwan News website, it was quaoted from the island's Mainland Affairs Council that “Beijing should introduce democratic reforms, such as party competition, and respect for human rights while behaving as a responsible regional player".

During his speech for around an hour, Xi reiterated the role of the party in the construction of modern China and in the growth of country and saying that "only socialism can save China, and only socialism with Chinese characteristics can develop China,". Xi also highlighted that attempts to separate party from the people would fail.
