ECOSOC Chief Calls for Financial Support for Small Island Developing States
Munir Akram, President of the UN Economic and Social Council, stressed that financial aids should be given to small island developing states (SIDS) for supporting their economic developments in the face of economic, social and environmental challenges especially arising from the negative effects of natural disasters such as eruption of the volcanoes and hurricanes as well as coronavirus pandemic.
Akram introduced that SIDS face challenges such as decline in tourism incomes arising from trade impediments, lockdowns and supply chain disruptions in parallel with coronavirus pandemic. He also stressed the importance of financial supports in terms of several projects facilitating financial investments which are essential for the economic development of SIDS.
