Every 10th of December, Human Rights Day is celebrated throughout the World in order to promote awareness and importance of political will for ensuring respect for the human rights and freedoms that implemented by the United Nations General Assembly through Universal Declaration of Human Rights in December 10, 1948.
Within this context, Human Rights Day was celebrated on 10th December 2022 as the 74th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year, because of the results of the Covid-19 pandemic, international organizations generally mentioned the importance of health during their messages. For example, according to World Health Organization, right to health is one of the fundamental human rights for all people around the world due to both the Universal Declaration and the Constitution of the World Health Organization (WHO).
The WHO’s General Director Dr. Tedros Adhanom, who was the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia gave a video message in honor of Human Rights Day on December 10, 2022. In his speech, Dr. Adhanom mentioned that the importance of ensuring the right to health together with necessity of generating affordable, quality healthcare system for every people all around the world. He also stated that the right to health is also dependent to promoting gender equality and providing food, education, housing, safe water and sanitation.
In addition to the WHO, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) also released an important message for the anniversary of the Human Rights Day. The UNDP described this year as a landmark year for human rights because of climate and biodiversity fights. Moreover, the UNDP stated that the importance of the right to clean, healthy and sustainable environment for all people. the UN General Assembly’s conformation about to providing that together with giving a tool in terms of new Human Rights for fighting against the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss is also mentioned in the UNDP’s message.
